Overview
Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. The purpose of the MD course in Psychiatry is to produce a competent psychiatrist to provide health care in the field of Psychiatry. A physician qualified in Psychiatry, diagnose and treat psychiatric disorders, take preventive and curative steps for the disease in the community at all levels of health care. They identify social, economic, environmental, biological and emotional determinants of mental health, and institute diagnostic, therapeutic, rehabilitative, preventive and promotive measures to provide holistic care to patient. They also demonstrate communication skills of a high order in explaining management and prognosis, providing counseling and giving health education messages to patients, families and communities. By the end of the course, the student acquires knowledge (cognitive domain), professionalism (affective domain) and skills (psychomotor domain). They are able to conduct detailed Mental Status Examination (MSE), Cognitive behaviour therapy, Supportive psychotherapy, Modified ECT, Clinical IQ assessment, Alcohol intoxication management, Opioid withdrawal management, etc. After completing the course, they are also able to demonstrate approach to patient with variety of clinical presentations including the symptoms like Auditory hallucinations, Visual hallucinations, Pseudo hallucination, Seizures true and pseudo seizure, Panic attack, Manic symptoms, Behavioural symptoms of schizophrenia, etc.

Eligibility
Candidates in possession of MBBS Degree or Provisional MBBS Pass Certificate recognized as per the provisions of the Indian Medical Council Act 1956 and possess permanent or provisional registration certificate of MBBS qualification issued by the Medical Council of India or State Medical Council and have completed one year of internship or are likely to complete the internship on or before 31 July.
