MD Microbiology

Overview

1. The MD Microbiology program at Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College & Hospital is a comprehensive postgraduate course aimed at developing skilled microbiologists capable of laboratory diagnosis, research, and infection control. The department provides training in bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, serology, molecular diagnostics, and hospital infection monitoring.
2. Affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) and approved by the National Medical Commission, the program combines theoretical knowledge with practical exposure in advanced microbiology laboratories. Residents learn specimen processing, culture techniques, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, molecular diagnostics, and laboratory management.
3. Academic activities include seminars, journal clubs, case discussions, audits, and mandatory dissertation work. Graduates are well-prepared for diagnostic laboratory practice, academic roles, research, or hospital infection control services.

Eligibility

1. MBBS degree recognized by NMC
2. Permanent or provisional MBBS registration with State Medical Council / NMC
3. Completion of CRRI on or before the prescribed cutoff date
4. Valid NEET-PG qualification with required percentile
5. Eligibility as per KUHS, NMC, and counselling authority norms
