The Department of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease at AIIMS Rajkot was established in 2021, and is a rapidly growing academic and clinical centre. It offers state-of-the-art diagnostics, including molecular diagnostics, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, antifungal, and mycobacterial sections, and is involved in infection control, antimicrobial stewardship, hospital infection surveillance, etc. The MD Microbiology programme is competency-based, emphasising both academic and practical lab work, clinical correlation, and research. Residents will get hands-on exposure in the 24×7 clinical microbiology laboratory, virus research & diagnostic laboratory (VRDL), participate in outbreak investigation, and public health aspects of microbiology. The programme also encourages publication, project work and interdisciplinary learning. As AIIMS Rajkot is relatively new, many infrastructure components (e.g. BSL-3 facility) are in development or being upgraded, which adds opportunities for being part of foundational growth.
