Overview
- The Department of Microbiology at BGSGIMS offers a robust MD Microbiology program, providing advanced training in diagnostic and clinical microbiology. The department comprises a well-equipped central microbiology laboratory with dedicated sections for bacteriology, virology, immunology, mycology, parasitology and serology. It also includes a molecular microbiology lab equipped with RT-PCR and biosafety cabinets, and a research lab with specialized microscopes (phase-contrast, fluorescent, dark-ground, trinocular with camera) for advanced diagnostics and research activities.
- BGSGIMS Microbiology labs are accredited under NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) from the first attempt — reflecting strong quality assurance standards and competence in diagnostics and molecular testing (for example, COVID-19 RT-PCR diagnostics).
- Faculty in the department are trained in hospital infection control, AETCOM (Attitude, Ethics & Communication), RBMET, CISP — enabling them to train students under modern competency-based curricula, combining theoretical knowledge with practical and research exposure.
- As part of a multi-specialty medical college, students benefit from interdisciplinary exposure and access to clinical services and hospital infrastructure — useful for integrated learning, research projects, and better understanding of microbiology’s clinical applications (in infectious diseases, diagnostics, infection control). The institute’s overall mission emphasizes producing socially responsible, professionally competent healthcare practitioners, and the MD Microbiology program aligns with this aim under regulated academic standards.
