Overview

The MD in Community Medicine offered at GMC Jammu is a three-year postgraduate medical degree designed to build specialists in public health, preventive medicine, epidemiology and health systems across community and primary care settings. During the programme, students engage in core learning of epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, health management, occupational and environmental health, maternal and child health, communicable disease control, non-communicable diseases, health programmes, field work in urban and rural health centres, and research projects in community settings. GMC Jammu, being a government medical college in Jammu & Kashmir, offers significant exposure to diverse population health challenges—rural, urban, tribal and remote communities—thus enhancing hands-on experience. The relatively affordable fee structure (e.g., around ₹ 75,000 for the entire programme as indicated) makes it accessible for many applicants. Upon completion, graduates are well‐placed to work in public health departments, district health administration, NGOs, academic institutions, research organisations, national health programmes or pursue further specialisation in public health or health management.
