Genomics is a discipline in genetics concerning the study of the genomes of organisms. It helps graduates understand the genomes and the statistical and computational methodologies for the analysis of biomolecular data.
This program provides students with a multidisciplinary perspective on genomics and its applications in healthcare. The field includes intensive efforts to determine the entire DNA sequence of organisms and fine-scale genetic mapping efforts. It also includes studies of intra-genomic phenomena such as heterosis, epistasis, pleiotropy and other interactions between loci and alleles within the genome. Using high-performance computing and math techniques, a genomics researcher should be able to analyse enormous amounts of sequencing data to find variations that affect health, disease or drug response.
The intent of the course is to build ‘genomics ready’ health professionals. The degree in genomics also opens doorway to the other associated areas and courses of higher studies such as precision medicine, genetic manipulation, genetics and breeding, clinical bioinformatics, genome analysis, applied and medical genomics and many more.
