Master of Science (MSc) in Genetics and Molecular Diagnostics

Overview

The availability of complete genome sequences of humans and many important pathogens has given insights into many human disease mechanisms. The underlying genetic mechanisms in the pathogenesis of various infectious and non-infectious diseases have opened many avenues into precise molecular level diagnostic procedures. The recent spur in molecular level understanding of diseases has led to tremendous advancements in the field of disease diagnostics. Diagnosis of disease has become a more precise science involving a combination of genetic, proteomic and biochemical tools. Understanding of these multi-disciplinary areas is essential for the diagnostic service industry.

Outcome: Students gain knowledge in theory and practical approaches of molecular genetic methods to the diagnosis and understanding of human disease. Scientific approaches to identify molecular biomarkers, development and validation of diagnostic assays are imparted into the curriculum. Students will carry out six-month research project to learn contemporary research methods and to answer specific biomedical questions.

Eligibility

A Bachelor’s degree in any branch of Life Sciences / Technology (Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Genetics, Agriculture or equivalent) or Health / Medical Sciences (Medicine, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy, Allied Health Sciences, Veterinary or equivalent) from a recognized Indian or Foreign University. Students with B. Sc. degree in Physical and Chemical Sciences, are also eligible to apply if biology is taken as one of the subjects at +2 level.
