The Medical Anthropology PhD/MPH Combined Program at Northwestern University is designed for students who seek to understand health, illness, and healthcare through both anthropological and public health perspectives. The program combines rigorous doctoral training in medical anthropology with professional education in public health, allowing students to investigate how cultural, political, economic, environmental, and social factors influence health outcomes. Students receive advanced instruction in ethnographic methods, qualitative research, health policy, epidemiology, biostatistics, global health, and community engagement. The curriculum emphasises interdisciplinary collaboration across anthropology, medicine, public health, sociology, and related fields. Doctoral research may focus on areas such as global health, reproductive health, chronic disease, health inequities, migration and health, mental health, environmental health, healthcare delivery systems, and medical technologies. Through MPH coursework, students gain practical skills in public health program development, population health analysis, and evidence-based policy evaluation. The combined degree prepares graduates to bridge academic research and real-world health challenges. Alumni frequently pursue careers in universities, public health agencies, international health organisations, healthcare systems, governmental institutions, non-governmental organisations, and research centres focused on improving health outcomes and reducing health disparities.
