Eligibility Criteria

Hold a recognised medical degree (for the Master of Medicine stream).
For other streams (e.g., Master of Science in Medicine), a relevant undergraduate degree in a related field may suffice.
English language proficiency (e.g., IELTS 6.5 overall, 6.0 in each band) if required.
Note: The course is not available to international students holding a standard student visa in some instances — the professional-medical education guide states this limitation.

Minimum Education

The Master of Medicine (Ophthalmic Science) at the University of Sydney provides medical graduates with advanced training in the fundamental ophthalmic sciences — including ophthalmic anatomy, physiology, optics, and the practical application of ophthalmic equipment and diagnostics.
Delivered mainly online with an intensive face-to-face practical component (often hosted at the Save Sight Institute in Sydney or a partner location), the programme allows students to continue clinical work while studying.
Students complete core units (e.g., OPSC5001 Ophthalmic Anatomy, OPSC5002 Ophthalmic Physiology, OPSC5003 Ophthalmic Optics, OPSC5004 Practical Ophthalmic Science) followed by a treatise/dissertation component (for the full master’s) of approximately 10,000-20,000 words under supervision.
Speciality streams such as Oculoplastic Surgery are available, provided candidates have relevant advanced speciality training or experience.
On completion, graduates are better equipped for roles in vision science, ophthalmology research or clinical ophthalmic practice, particularly in settings requiring advanced diagnostic or scientific understanding.
