Overview
- The Master of International Ophthalmology at the University of Sydney is a specialised postgraduate coursework programme designed to enhance the capacity of ophthalmology practitioners, especially in the Asia-Pacific and developing country settings, to manage eye health needs with advanced knowledge and surgical competence.
- The programme comprises two streams (Community Ophthalmology and Post Vocational Ophthalmology), allowing for differing entry backgrounds—whether from countries with minimal specialist training or from those with established training systems.
- The curriculum (48 credit points) includes 36 cp core units (for the respective stream) plus 12 cp treatise units.
- Students learn both foundational and advanced ophthalmic sciences, clinical ophthalmology, surgical ophthalmology, and management of eye diseases common in underserved settings. The blended mode (online + intensive face-to-face segments) enables practitioners to continue working while studying. The outcome is a qualification recognising advanced ophthalmic knowledge suited to regional health contexts, and a treatise/capstone experience enabling applied learning. This course is designed to build leadership and expertise in ophthalmology in global health settings.
