Overview

The Master of Health Law at the University of Sydney is a specialist postgraduate qualification integrating health, law and policy frameworks. Designed for both legal practitioners and non-law professionals (such as health clinicians, administrators, policy makers), the programme provides advanced training in the legal regulation of health services, bioethics, public health law, mental health law, global health governance, information rights in healthcare and professional liability. Core units include foundational modules on legal reasoning (for non-law entrants) and units such as “Critical Issues in Public Health Law” and “Government Regulation, Health Policy and Ethics”. Electives allow students to tailor their learning to areas of interest such as global health law, new health technologies or mental illness law. A research-project or independent research may also be undertaken in the Master stream. The flexible structure (full-time or part-time) supports working professionals. The course draws on the University’s strong law school reputation, its health law research centre and global connections, offering students both academic rigour and practical policy relevance. Through this qualification, graduates are equipped for roles in regulatory agencies, health-service governance, legal practice specialising in health, policy development and advisory roles in public and private health sectors.
