Two courses from any combination of computer science, biology, or statistics

Minimum GPA: 5.5 on UQ’s 7-point scale for entry.

English language proficiency: IELTS overall 6.5 required.

The Master of Bioinformatics (Research Extensive) at UQ is designed to deepen students’ computational and laboratory skills by combining structured coursework with a substantial research project. Over the duration of the program, students take core bioinformatics courses (such as “Bioinformatics 1: Introduction” and “Bioinformatics 2: Development & Research”) and advanced electives, while dedicating a significant portion to a year-long (or equivalent) independent research project. This structure enables students to gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, making it ideal for those interested in pursuing a PhD or a research career in bioinformatics. The program’s flexibility allows tailoring through more than 20 courses, and its strong research grounding positions graduates for roles in academia, industry, biotech, or government.

1. Check the entry requirements and program rules on the UQ website/planner.
2. Prepare academic transcripts, proof of the required courses (CS/biology / statistics), and your GPA.
3. Submit an application via the UQ postgraduate application portal.
4. Indicate if you are applying for 2-year or 1.5-year duration (if eligible).
5. Once accepted, plan and discuss your research project with a potential supervisor in SCMB / IMB.
6. Enroll in core coursework, electives, and register for the research project.
7. Complete the research project over the second year / remaining semesters and finish all required units.
