Madras Medical College (MMC) is a public medical college located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It was established on 2 February 1835 during British Raj. It is the third oldest medical college in India, established after Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) and Calcutta Medical College. In 1996, when the metropolis of Madras was renamed as Chennai, the college was renamed the Chennai Medical College. It was later re-renamed back to the Madras Medical College since the college was known worldwide by the older name. Since 1857, the college has been affiliated to the University of Madras and all degrees of Health Sciences were awarded by the same until 1988 when the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University Act, 1987 received the assent of the president of India.[6] This affiliating university started functioning from July 1988 and is governed by the said Act.
Facilities:
Hostel Facility: The institute has a hostel facility for boys and girls. It is located inside the campus and is equipped with all the modern facilities. Amenities such as canteen, mess, Wifi, purified water, CCTV security and Gym are provided in the hostel.
Library: The library of MMC Chennai has a comprehensive collection of both conventional and electronic resources on all branches of knowledge with a robust hi-tech infrastructural facility. A digital library fulfils the electronic material needs of the students.
Sports: Madras Medical College, Chennai has indoor and outdoor sports facilities. Indoor games like carrom, table tennis, chess are available in the hostel. The college has a well-furnished football field and cricket fields. It also has a hockey field, handball, volleyball and badminton court which is equipped with high-intensity floodlights.
