Government Medical College Kottayam, the third Medical College in Kerala, was established in 1962. It was formally inaugurated on 03.12.1962 by Sri. R Sankar, the then Chief Minister of Kerala in the presence of Sri.M P Govindan Nair, the Health Minister. It has a campus that spreads across 265 acres of beautiful land shared by two panchayats (Arpookkara and Athirampuzha) and Kottayam municipality. This is a tertiary care hospital catering to people from five districts including Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Ernakulam. This is the referral hospital for lakhs of pilgrims visiting Sabarimala temple.
