The Government granted this request and from 1st March, 2021 it became Government Medical College, Dindigul. In 2020, it gained affiliation to “The Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University”. This Instituition has been approved by the National Medical Commission. After the affiliation and approval, the College moved to be a center of excellence imparting training in all the specialities in the field of medicine and surgery and it is now one of the premier institutions in the country. The Government Medical College & Hospital, Dindigul, one of the premier Institutions in the country, in its early days was started as a dispensary at Salai Road, Dindigul in the year 1923. The Hospital moved out of the Salai Road and was housed at the Trichy Road, when it was upgraded as a Taluk Hospital with a bed strength of 60 in 1962.
