The General Practice Residency Program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital is a CODA-accredited postdoctoral dental residency designed to provide advanced clinical and hospital-based training beyond the scope of predoctoral dental education. Located within one of the nation's leading academic medical centers, the program offers a unique opportunity for dentists to develop expertise in treating medically complex patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Residents work alongside physicians, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals while managing comprehensive dental care cases within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment. A major component of the curriculum involves providing emergency dental services through the hospital's emergency department and delivering care to hospitalized patients requiring specialized dental management. The program includes rotations in emergency medicine, anesthesia, general medicine, and oral and maxillofacial surgery, allowing residents to gain a deeper understanding of systemic health and its impact on oral healthcare. Didactic education includes seminars, journal clubs, clinical conferences, and interdisciplinary teaching activities. Residents actively participate in hospital rounds and academic presentations while refining their skills in treatment planning, patient management, and advanced clinical dentistry. Graduates emerge with enhanced confidence in hospital dentistry, medically complex patient care, emergency management, and comprehensive dental treatment, making them well prepared for private practice, hospital dentistry, public health dentistry, or advanced specialty training.
