About Course

The Plastic Surgery Microsurgery Fellowship at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is one of the premier microsurgical training programs in the United States. Offered through the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery, the fellowship combines extensive clinical exposure, advanced operative experience, structured academic education, and high-level research opportunities.
The fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive experience in complex reconstructive surgery. Fellows work closely with nationally and internationally recognized faculty members and manage patients requiring sophisticated microsurgical reconstruction following cancer treatment, trauma, congenital abnormalities, and other complex conditions.
Clinical training spans multiple prestigious institutions including NYU Langone Health, Bellevue Hospital, the Manhattan VA, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This multi-institutional exposure provides a diverse surgical experience and access to a broad range of patient populations and reconstructive challenges.
A major strength of the program is its exceptionally high microsurgical volume. Fellows participate in approximately 250 to 300 free flap procedures and gain extensive experience in breast reconstruction, head and neck reconstruction, extremity salvage, nerve reconstruction, and microvascular transplantation.
The fellowship promotes progressive operative autonomy while maintaining close faculty mentorship. Fellows become proficient in flap selection, operative planning, microsurgical anastomosis, postoperative monitoring, and management of complex reconstructive complications.
Academic development is strongly emphasized throughout the fellowship. Fellows participate in grand rounds, microsurgery conferences, morbidity and mortality meetings, journal clubs, and multidisciplinary educational programs.
Research is an integral component of training. Fellows are expected to complete clinical research projects and present their findings at national meetings, including conferences organized by the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery. Research presentations and scholarly activities are actively supported by the department.
Graduates are highly prepared for careers in academic plastic surgery, microsurgical reconstruction, oncologic reconstruction, peripheral nerve surgery, and leadership roles at major medical centers worldwide.
