Fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery

1. Candidates should have completed the required prior neurosurgical training for entry into a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship.
2. Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for the ACPNF-accredited fellowship.
3. Candidates must be eligible for clinical training at UAB and Children’s of Alabama.
4. Fellows are expected to participate in the full pediatric neurosurgery service, perioperative decision-making, inpatient and clinical care, conferences, resident mentoring, and clinical research.

The Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine is a one-year advanced training program focused on the surgical and non-surgical management of neurological conditions affecting children. Fellows receive comprehensive clinical and operative experience at Children’s of Alabama, covering pediatric brain, spine, and peripheral nervous system disorders, along with perioperative decision-making and inpatient care. The program also includes pediatric neurosurgery conferences, resident teaching, multidisciplinary clinical care, and opportunities for clinical research. The fellowship provides exposure to advanced pediatric neurosurgical techniques and innovative treatment approaches, preparing fellows for specialized pediatric neurosurgical practice and eligibility for the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery examination

3. The program reviews applicants for suitability for advanced pediatric neurosurgical training.
4. Selected candidates are invited for an interview.
5. The selected fellow completes the one-year Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship at UAB and Children’s of Alabama.
6. Upon successful completion, fellows are qualified to sit for the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery (ABPNS) examination.
