The Congenital Cardiac Surgery Fellowship at the University of Minnesota Medical School is a minimum 1-year fellowship focused on advanced surgical and postoperative management of congenital heart defects in pediatric patients. The program provides comprehensive training in preoperative and postoperative care, cardiopulmonary bypass, sternotomy and wound closure, arterial and venous cannulation, reoperative pediatric cardiac surgery, and pediatric heart transplantation. Fellows progressively develop operative skills under faculty supervision and mentorship, while also receiving strong exposure to heart transplantation, ventricular assist devices (VADs), inpatient postoperative care, and research in these areas.
