About Course

The Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, now known as the Fellowship in Complex Benign Gynecology (CBG), is a highly specialized two-year fellowship designed to train future leaders in advanced gynecologic surgery. The fellowship is accredited by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and offers extensive exposure to complex benign gynecologic conditions.
Fellows work alongside fellowship-trained minimally invasive gynecologic surgeons and actively participate in patient care, research, surgical education, and leadership development. The program provides a high volume of operative experience involving advanced laparoscopic, robotic, vaginal, hysteroscopic, and open surgical procedures.
The fellowship emphasizes comprehensive management of patients with endometriosis, uterine fibroids, chronic pelvic pain, infertility, benign ovarian tumors, and uterine anomalies. Fellows gain experience in both office-based and operating-room-based procedures, ensuring broad clinical competency.
A major strength of the program is its extensive robotic surgery experience, with approximately half of operative cases utilizing robotic-assisted techniques. Fellows also collaborate with specialists in colorectal surgery, urology, urogynecology, and interventional radiology, creating a multidisciplinary learning environment.
The fellowship includes dedicated continuity clinics where fellows independently manage patients under faculty supervision. This experience strengthens clinical decision-making and long-term patient management skills.
Research is an integral component of training. Fellows complete an original research project that is expected to result in presentation at a national scientific meeting and publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Dedicated research time is built into the fellowship schedule.
Educational activities include AAGL fellowship webinars, surgical simulation training, journal clubs, fellowship council events, and specialized workshops covering research methodology, manuscript preparation, and quality improvement.
Graduates are prepared for careers in academic medicine, advanced gynecologic surgery, minimally invasive surgery centers, and leadership positions in women's health programs nationally and internationally.
