About Course

The Advanced Fellowship in Transplant Hepatology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is a highly specialized one-year training program designed to prepare physicians for careers in transplant hepatology and advanced liver disease management. The fellowship is jointly supported by the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, providing comprehensive exposure to both medical and surgical aspects of liver transplantation.
NYU Langone's liver transplant program performs approximately 85 to 100 liver transplants annually and is recognized as one of the leading transplant centers in New York State. Fellows gain extensive experience managing patients before, during, and after liver transplantation while working with multidisciplinary transplant teams.
Training includes evaluation of transplant candidates, management of cirrhosis and portal hypertension, treatment of acute and chronic liver failure, viral hepatitis management, hepatocellular carcinoma care, and post-transplant immunosuppression management. Fellows develop expertise in both routine and highly complex hepatology cases.
A unique component of the fellowship is direct exposure to liver transplant operations and organ procurement procedures. Fellows observe liver transplantation surgeries and participate in liver procurements, enhancing their understanding of transplant surgery and donor organ management.
The fellowship offers extensive inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences across NYU Langone's transplant services. Fellows work closely with hepatologists, transplant surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, and other specialists involved in comprehensive liver disease management.
Research is strongly encouraged throughout the training year. Fellows have opportunities to participate in clinical studies involving liver disease, transplantation outcomes, hepatocellular carcinoma, viral hepatitis, and emerging therapies in hepatology. Faculty mentorship supports scholarly presentations and publication development.
Educational activities include hepatology conferences, transplant selection meetings, multidisciplinary case reviews, pathology conferences, transplant surgery discussions, journal clubs, and national hepatology meetings. Fellows are encouraged to participate in academic presentations and teaching activities.
Graduates of the fellowship are prepared for careers in academic hepatology, transplant centers, advanced liver disease programs, clinical research, and leadership positions in hepatology and transplantation.
