Fellowship in Gastroenterology

• Must have an MD (Doctor of Medicine) or equivalent degree
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency
• Board-certified or board-eligible in Internal Medicine
• Valid USMLE scores (Step exams completed)
• Eligible to obtain a California medical license before starting training
• Strong clinical background and letters of recommendation (as part of application review)

The Gastroenterology Fellowship at UC Irvine School of Medicine is a three-year, ACGME-accredited program that provides comprehensive training in clinical and academic gastroenterology and hepatology. The program is designed to prepare fellows for careers in both advanced clinical practice and academic medicine, with a strong emphasis on the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Fellows gain extensive experience through inpatient and outpatient care, along with hands-on training in endoscopic procedures and multidisciplinary treatment approaches. In addition, the fellowship promotes research, teaching, and scholarly development, helping physicians build expertise in evidence-based medicine and preparing them for board certification in gastroenterology.
