The Emergency Medicine Research Fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a prestigious two-year, SAEM-approved fellowship designed to develop emergency physicians into independent investigators and future leaders in academic emergency medicine. Offered through the Department of Emergency Medicine, the program combines rigorous research training with formal graduate education, enabling fellows to earn a Master of Science in Health Services and Outcomes Research (HSOR) or another approved master's degree aligned with their career interests. Fellows receive at least 75% protected research time, allowing them to focus on developing methodological expertise, conducting independent research projects, and building a competitive academic portfolio. Each fellow is supported by a multidisciplinary mentorship team that includes methodological experts, content specialists, and a dedicated Mentorship Advisory Committee. Training includes coursework in clinical investigation, epidemiology, biostatistics, responsible conduct of research, and grant writing, along with participation in research seminars, works-in-progress conferences, and collaborative projects across Northwestern University's nationally recognized research centers. Fellows are expected to produce peer-reviewed publications, present at national scientific meetings, and develop competitive applications for federal career development awards. Graduates are exceptionally well prepared for careers as physician-scientists, academic faculty members, and leaders in emergency medicine research.
