Fellowship in Clinical Nephrology

The Nephrology Clinical Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine is a two-year program with an optional third year for research or specialized training. Fellows receive comprehensive clinical experience in the evaluation and management of kidney diseases across inpatient and outpatient settings, including UAB Hospital, Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center, UAB Highlands, The Kirklin Clinic, and Children’s Hospital of Alabama. Training includes inpatient nephrology consultation, critical care, kidney transplantation, kidney biopsy, dialysis, and management of acute and chronic kidney disorders. Fellows can pursue electives in transplant nephrology, home dialysis, interventional nephrology, renal pathology, pediatric nephrology, plasmapheresis, hypertension, glomerular disease, and cystic kidney disease. The program also emphasizes teaching, conferences, clinical research, and basic science research to prepare fellows for careers in academic and clinical nephrology.

1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), Program Code 1007148F0.
2. Submit a current Curriculum Vitae (CV), updated within three months.
3. Submit medical school transcripts and diploma, if requested.
4. Submit the Medical School Dean’s Letter.
5. Submit three Letters of Recommendation, including letters from former program directors.
6. Submit certification or verification of previous residency training.
7. Provide evidence of eligibility for an Alabama medical license and Controlled Substance Certificate.
8. Provide evidence of eligibility for Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.
9. International Medical Graduates must submit a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate.
10. Applications are accepted through ERAS from June through May, with applications reviewed beginning in July.
11. Interview invitations are released in the last week of August, and interviews are conducted from September through October.
12. The program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), with Match Day in November and the fellowship beginning July 1.
13. The program can sponsor J-1 visas; H-1B visas are generally not sponsored unless the applicant is already within the United States.
