Overview
The Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a comprehensive ACGME-accredited advanced training program designed to prepare anesthesiologists for leadership roles in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and perioperative cardiovascular care. Based primarily at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, one of the highest-volume cardiac surgery centres in the United States, the fellowship provides extensive exposure to complex adult cardiac surgical procedures. Fellows participate in the anaesthetic management of coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair and replacement procedures, aortic surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, transcatheter valve interventions, ventricular assist device implantation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), heart transplantation, and lung transplantation. Training includes advanced perioperative transesophageal echocardiography, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, cardiopulmonary bypass management, and perioperative critical care. Fellows work closely with nationally recognised faculty in anesthesiology, cardiac surgery, cardiology, and critical care medicine. The program also offers opportunities for clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, teaching, and professional development. Upon successful completion, fellows are eligible to pursue certification in Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography and careers in academic medical centres, specialised cardiac hospitals, and advanced cardiovascular anaesthesia practices.
