Fellowship in Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology

The Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship at UCSF School of Medicine is a 1-year ACGME-accredited advanced training program focused on the comprehensive perioperative care of patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery. The program provides intensive clinical exposure at a high-volume tertiary care center, where fellows manage a wide spectrum of cases including routine and complex cardiac surgeries, minimally invasive procedures, heart and lung transplantation, ventricular assist devices, and extracorporeal life support. Training emphasizes the development of expertise in advanced hemodynamic management, intraoperative monitoring, and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), along with rotations in cardiothoracic anesthesia and critical care. Fellows work within a multidisciplinary team and benefit from strong academic mentorship, research opportunities, and hands-on experience, preparing them for leadership roles in academic medicine or high-acuity clinical practice.
