The University of California San Diego School of Medicine provides advanced medical education, clinical training, and research opportunities through its Department of Surgery. The Acute Care Surgery Fellowship is a two-year training pathway that combines surgical critical care with advanced experience in emergency general surgery, trauma surgery, and elective general surgery. Fellows spend approximately six months on the emergency general surgery service in a junior attending role and rotate through vascular, hepatobiliary, and thoracic surgery. Additional elective opportunities include pediatric trauma, orthopedic surgery, burn surgery, and neurosurgery. The program also encourages clinical and basic science research to prepare fellows for independent surgical practice and leadership in acute care surgery.
