Fellowship Course in Clinical Infectious Disease

The Infectious Diseases Clinical Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine provides comprehensive training in common and complex infectious diseases across diverse inpatient and outpatient settings. Fellows gain clinical experience in General Infectious Diseases, Transplant and Immunocompromised Infectious Diseases, and Veterans Affairs consultation services, along with ambulatory training at the 1917 HIV Clinic, UAB Highlands Infectious Diseases Clinic, Hepatology Clinic, Transplant Infectious Diseases Clinic, and other specialty clinics. The program also offers elective training in pediatric, orthopedic, hospitalist, medical microbiology, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection prevention. Fellows participate in board review, journal clubs, didactic lectures, Infectious Diseases Grand Rounds, and clinical reasoning sessions, with extensive opportunities for clinical, translational, and basic research.

1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), Program Number 1007146F0.
2. Submit a current Curriculum Vitae (CV), updated within three months.
3. Submit medical school transcripts and diploma, if requested.
4. Submit the Medical School Dean’s Letter.
5. Submit three Letters of Recommendation, including letters from former program directors.
6. Submit certification or verification of previous residency training.
7. Provide evidence of eligibility for an Alabama medical license and Controlled Substance Certificate.
8. Provide evidence of eligibility for Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.
9. International Medical Graduates must submit a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate.
10. Applications are submitted through ERAS from June through May, with applications reviewed beginning in July and interview invitations released in August.
11. The program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), with Match Day in December and fellowship commencement on July 1.
12. The program can sponsor J-1 visas; H-1B sponsorship is generally not provided unless the fellow is already in the United States.
