Overview

The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Oral Medicine) at the University of Sydney is a specialist three-year full-time programme aimed at qualified dentists seeking training in non-surgical oral medicine. Students will learn to diagnose and manage a broad spectrum of oral disease — including diseases of the oral mucosa, salivary glands, facial pain disorders, and the oral manifestations of systemic disease (such as transplant patients, immunocompromised individuals) in both hospital and non-hospital settings. The curriculum incorporates oral and general pathology, biomedical foundations, clinical decision-making, advanced diagnostics (e.g., imaging, biopsy interpretation) and specialist patient care. Clinical placements occur at leading hospital centres (such as the Westmead Centre for Oral Health) and are integrated with the School’s research framework. Graduates are prepared to practise as oral medicine specialists, able to work in tertiary hospital settings, specialist clinics or academia and research, and meet the criteria for specialist registration with the Dental Board of Australia / Australian Dental Council.
