The Combined Pediatrics and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency Program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a unique five-year integrated residency designed to train future leaders in pediatric rehabilitation medicine. The program combines the strengths of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, one of the leading pediatric hospitals in the United States, and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, consistently ranked among the nation's top rehabilitation hospitals. Residents receive comprehensive training across the full spectrum of pediatric medicine and rehabilitation, enabling them to care for children with both common and highly complex medical conditions. The curriculum emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration, evidence-based practice, family-centered care, and functional outcome optimization. Residents gain extensive experience managing cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, neuromuscular diseases, developmental disabilities, orthopedic impairments, and medically complex pediatric patients. The program offers specialized tracks in leadership, medical education, and quality improvement and safety. Longitudinal continuity clinics allow residents to follow patients throughout their rehabilitation journey. Strong mentorship, research opportunities, and physician-scientist resources further support career development. Upon graduation, trainees are exceptionally prepared for careers in pediatric rehabilitation medicine, academic medicine, healthcare leadership, research, and advanced subspecialty practice. Successful graduates may become eligible for board certification in Pediatrics, PM&R, and Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine.
