Obtaining sonographic volumes of the fetus allows for the visualization of data in any plane and in any direction and hence has an enormous potential in obstetric imaging. Acquiring optimal images in 3D ultrasound requires training and familiarization with the set‐up and controls of the ultrasound equipment. Many aspects of this innovative technique are often not well understood by operators leading to underutilisation of this technique. This chapter will address the basic principles and techniques for producing 3D ultrasound images and how to optimize image quality. The technical capabilities as well as its limitations such as artifact are also discussed. In addition, a short list of clinical applications for this technique will be presented in a very lucid manner.
