Cardiothoracic Surgery residency

The Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program provides comprehensive training in the surgical management of diseases of the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other structures within the chest. Residents gain hands-on experience in adult cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, congenital heart surgery, heart and lung transplantation, cardiothoracic intensive care, and minimally invasive and transcatheter procedures. The program also includes structured teaching, simulation and laboratory training, research opportunities, and exposure to complex cardiothoracic cases.

1. Integrated 4/3 Pathway: Apply through the UAB General Surgery Residency application process.
2. Select/apply for the Cardiothoracic 4/3 pathway.
3. Submit the required application documents through the Electronic Residency Application Service.
4. Selected applicants are invited for an interview.
5. Participate in the National Resident Matching Program.
6. Traditional Pathway: Applicants who have completed General Surgery Residency apply and participate in the National Resident Matching Program for the two-year Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency.
