Overview
- The Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is one of the premier cardiothoracic surgical training programs in the United States. Conducted under the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the residency offers comprehensive exposure to adult cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, minimally invasive procedures, robotic surgery, structural heart disease management, and transplantation.
- Residents receive clinical training at renowned institutions including Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. The program exposes trainees to highly diverse patient populations and complex surgical cases involving coronary artery disease, valvular disorders, thoracic malignancies, heart failure, lung disease, and esophageal conditions.
- The curriculum combines progressive operative responsibility with extensive didactic education, simulation-based learning, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Residents gain hands-on experience in ventricular assist devices (VADs), transcatheter valve procedures, thoracic oncology surgery, transplantation, and advanced minimally invasive cardiothoracic techniques.
- The residency strongly emphasizes research, academic productivity, leadership development, and evidence-based surgical practice. Faculty members actively mentor residents in clinical research, publications, and presentations at national and international conferences.
- NYU’s integrated I-6 pathway is particularly recognized for early cardiothoracic surgical exposure and structured subspecialty training. Graduates of the program are well prepared for careers in academic medicine, advanced fellowships, transplantation, robotic surgery, and high-complexity cardiothoracic surgical practice.
