• Must hold an MBBS degree from a recognised university/institution.
• Must have completed the required internship training for MBBS (as per regulations).
• Must qualify the DNB-CET (Centralised Entrance Test) conducted by NBE.
• Must meet any additional institutional/hospital criteria as set by the accredited hospital.
• For secondary DNB (post-diploma) programmes: must hold a recognised postgraduate diploma (in the relevant speciality) and meet further requirements.

The DNB programme is a prestigious and recognised specialist medical training qualification in India, awarded by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). It offers structured residency-based training in accredited hospitals across India, allowing graduates to gain exposure to clinical work, surgeries, diagnostics, research, teaching, and academic rounds. The training emphasises hands-on experience, case-based learning, seminars, journal clubs, thesis/dissertation, and a final exit examination. On successful completion, graduates are awarded the DNB qualification, which is equivalent to MD/MS (and in super-speciality cases, equivalent to DM/MCh) for employment, teaching, and clinical practice. Medical colleges emphasise that the DNB route provides an option beyond traditional university-affiliated postgraduate degrees, and can be undertaken in both government and private accredited hospitals. Institutional infrastructure, patient load, supervision quality, and accreditation status play a crucial role in the effectiveness of training.

1. Complete the MBBS degree and internship execution as required.
2. Check the NBE website/bulletin for DNB eligibility and application notification.
3. Register and appear for the DNB-CET (Centralised Entrance Test) or other selection test as specified by NBE.
4. After examination, counselling is conducted (centralised by NBE) for seat allotment in accredited hospitals.
5. Once a seat is allocated, join the accredited hospital for the residency training, complete documentation and institutional induction.
6. Undergo full duration of residency, including clinical work, academic sessions, thesis/dissertation, periodic assessments and logbook maintenance.
7. At the end of the training period, appear for the DNB final examination (theory + practical/clinical) organised by NBE.
8. On passing the exit exam, receive the DNB qualification and proceed to register/comply with the regulatory body for practice/teaching.
