Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi and protozoa. Many of these microorganisms, however, carry out important functions in their niches that are essential for life forms. Microbiologists study the interaction of microorganisms with other organisms and how they affect their lives, as well as the roles these organisms play in the environment. This discipline includes fundamental research on the biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, ecology, evolution and clinical aspects of microorganisms, including the host response to these agents.
Recent trends from the industry focus on production of totally new eukaryotic compounds like insulin, interferon and other recombinant products, using microorganisms in large quantities. Biofuels like bioethanol and biodiesel are being manufactured using new raw materials like lignocellulosics. Algae and other biomass material are considered as an alternative to fossil fuels. Many new recombinant vaccines are produced to replace crude vaccines and make them polyvalent to reduce the dosage.
