Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Optometry

1. Passed 10+2 / PUC (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
2. Minimum 50% aggregate in PCB (may vary by category).
3. Satisfy institute medical fitness requirements for clinical postings.
4. Meet any entrance / selection requirements set by AJIMS or RGUHS for that admission year (see admission section).
5. Submission of required documents (10th, 12th marksheets, DOB proof, migration if applicable, caste certificate if applicable, recent photos, etc.).

B.Sc. Optometry at A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre (AJIMS), Mangalore trains students to become competent primary eye-care professionals. The program combines classroom theory (ocular anatomy, optics, visual optics, ocular pharmacology, ocular diseases) with extensive practical training in refraction, binocular vision assessment, contact lens practice, paediatric and geriatric vision care, and community eye-screening. Clinical postings take place in AJIMS’s multi-specialty teaching hospital eye OPD and allied vision clinics, offering exposure to high patient volumes and a range of ocular conditions. Students learn diagnostic techniques (slit-lamp exam, tonometry, retinoscopy), low-vision rehabilitation principles and interprofessional collaboration with ophthalmology, paediatrics and public health teams. The curriculum emphasizes ethics, patient communication, record keeping, and professional practice management — preparing graduates for hospital, private practice, optical retail, vision centres, or further specialization (M.Sc. / Fellowship in Optometry / Contact Lenses / Low Vision).
