    What is Optometry?

    Optometry is a branch of healthcare focused on the examination, diagnosis, treatment, and management of eye and vision disorders.

    What does an Optometrist do ?

    • Examine eyes to determine visual acuity and perception, focus and coordination and to diagnose diseases and other abnormalities such as glaucoma or color blindness.  
    • Prescribe, supply, fit and adjust eyeglasses, contact lenses and other vision aids.  
    • Analyse test results and develop a treatment plan.  
    • Remove foreign bodies from the eye.  
    • Prescribe therapeutic procedures to correct or conserve vision.  
    • Educate and counsel patients on contact lens care, visual hygiene, preventive vision care. 
    • Consult with and refer patients to ophthalmologist or other health care practitioner if additional medical treatment is determined necessary.  
    • Provide patients undergoing eye surgeries, such as cataract and laser vision correction, with pre- and post-operative care. 

    Scope of Optometry

    • Work alongside Ophthalmologists to provide specialised eye care
    • Become an eyewear consultant in optical showrooms like LensKart, Titan Eye+ etc.
    • Start private practice in primary eye care
    • Start your own optical business
    • Join corporate hospitals as certified optometrist
    • Join an optometry institute and train future eye care professionals

    50% in PCB for Open Category

    40% in PCB for Reserved Category


    Candidates who have completed diploma in ophthalmic science /

    diploma in optometry from GMC/MUHS can also join the

    undergraduate course. They would be eligible to join in 2nd year of

    optometry.
