Nuclear Medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with the use of radioactive substances in research, diagnosis, and treatment. Nuclear medicine is deals with medical imaging that helps physicians identify, diagnose, and treat certain conditions by using small amounts of radioactive material. Nuclear medicine is especially valuable in pinpointing molecular activity, which enables doctors to judge the severity of a condition. This is an under graduate allied health science specialization course. The course is provided under the affiliation of The Tamilnadu Dr.M.G.R Medical University. It is a four years program including one year internship. It combines elements of Applied Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Computing with patient care skills. Radioactive tracers are administered to patients in order to diagnose and/or treat disease. A Nuclear Medicine Technologist works under the guidance and direction of Nuclear Medicine Physicians for preparation of radioactive drugs and administers them to patients in order to create images that cause abnormal areas of the body to appear different from normal images. They operate the equipment that creates these images in a patient’s body.
