Overview

    The Cardio- Thoracic surgeon needs to work on a Stopped Heart for certain surgeries and it is necessary to temporarily replace the patient's heart and lung function. It is the responsibility of the perfusionist (A candidate completing the B. Sc (Cardio Pulmonary Perfusion care Technology Course), a specialized healthcare professional, to assume the function of the heart and/or lungs during these surgical procedures. A perfusionist operates a heart-lung machine, which is an artificial blood pump, which propels oxygenated blood to the patient's tissues while the surgeon operates on the heart. The perfusionist manages the physiological and metabolic demands of the patient while the cardiac surgeon operates on the heart. It is also the perfusionist's responsibility to deliver the drug that stops the heart. A perfusionist generally spends 90% of his or her time in the operation theatre for cardiac cases, but the responsibilities extending to the areas such as cardiovascular intensive care unit and catheterization laboratory.

    Coronary artery bypass surgeries are on the rise in India. Such surgeries have revolutionized the treatment of occlusive coronary artery disease. This career is for candidates who thrive on the high octane surgical atmosphere of major cardiac surgeries. There is a huge need for perfusionist in the Cardio Thoracic departments. A perfusionist is a skilled person with knowledge in academic and clinical practice who is responsible for operating heart lung machine during Cardio Thoracic Surgery.

    Perfusionist is responsible for the following during the Cardiac Surgery:

    • Monitoring the altered circulatory process by operating the heart lung machine
    • Taking measures in case of abnormalities and keeping surgeon and anesthetist fully informed about the conditions.
    • Perfusionist are also competent in the management of other related equipment's, techniques and procedures.

    The perfusionist has a wide scope in ever expanding health care services and with growth of multi specialty hospitals. Increase in heart related illness and Cardiac surgeries has resulted in job openings in this field. It is a demanding but eventually very rewarding career in the field of medicine.

Eligibility

    Candidates belonging to all categories for admission to the Allied Health Sciences should have passed the qualifying examinations after period of 12 years of study with English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Botany & Zoology with minimum 35% marks in each subjects (Academic / Vocational Stream).

    Eligibility for Lateral Entry

    • The lateral entry is applicable for all the UG Degree Course of Allied Health Science wherever corresponding Diploma Course is available in the concerned specialty. The duration of one year Internship applicable for all the Lateral Entry Candidates.
    • Candidates belongs to all categories for admission to the Allied Health Sciences should have passed the qualifying examination after period of 12years of study with English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Botany and Zoology with minimum 35% marks in each subjects (Academic/Vocational Stream).
