Overview

The Bachelor of Science (Health) and Master of Nursing programme at the University of Sydney is designed to provide students with an integrated pathway into nursing that begins with a strong grounding in health sciences and transitions into professional nursing practice. The early years focus on scientific foundations, health systems, human biology, psychology, e-health and health determinants. In later years, students complete the Master of Nursing component, which emphasises clinical practice, nursing theory, leadership, healthcare systems, and professional practice in a range of settings. The combined structure allows students to build both the depth of science and the breadth of nursing practice, culminating in eligibility for registration as a nurse in Australia. The integrated nature of the 192 credit-point programme and embedded clinical experience ensures students are well-prepared for contemporary nursing roles in hospitals, community health, global health and varied care settings. Also, this pathway provides flexibility, allowing graduates to move into nursing with a strong preparatory base in health science which can open up broader career possibilities beyond basic nursing roles.
