The Orthoptic Program at Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences is a specialized training program designed to prepare students for careers in diagnosing and managing disorders of eye movement and binocular vision. The program combines academic coursework with extensive clinical training within the Mayo Clinic ophthalmology department. Students gain in-depth knowledge of visual development, ocular anatomy, neuro-ophthalmology, and diagnostic techniques used in orthoptics. Clinical training allows students to work alongside ophthalmologists and eye care specialists in evaluating patients with conditions such as strabismus, amblyopia, and other vision disorders. The curriculum emphasizes patient assessment, treatment planning, and non-surgical management techniques. Students also develop strong communication skills to educate patients and support multidisciplinary eye care teams. Graduates are prepared to work as certified orthoptists in hospitals, eye care clinics, and specialized ophthalmology centers.
