Bachelor of Applied Science (Occupational Therapy)

5. Applicants must satisfy “inherent requirements” of professional practice (e.g., ability to undertake clinical placements).

The Bachelor of Applied Science (Occupational Therapy) at the University of Sydney is a comprehensive four-year full-time undergraduate programme designed to prepare graduates for professional practice as occupational therapists. Students cover core biomedical sciences (anatomy, physiology, neuroscience), human development, psychology, social sciences, and occupational therapy theory and practice (including participation, environment and occupation). The curriculum includes extensive work-integrated learning (placements) — over 1,000 hours of supervised clinical/fieldwork experience in a variety of settings, including hospitals, community services, education, industry or specialist practice. Students learn to assess, design, implement and evaluate interventions that restore or enhance a person’s ability to perform meaningful occupations (daily tasks, work, leisure, education), and work in interdisciplinary teams, respond to diverse populations and settings (including ageing, disability, mental health, Indigenous health, rural/remote). Being accredited by relevant professional bodies ensures that graduates are eligible for registration and professional membership. The pass version awards the Bachelor's degree; high-achieving students may enrol in the honours stream, which involves a research project and alternative units in the final semesters.
