Overview
The Athletic Training Student Clinical Program at Lurie Children’s Hospital provides undergraduate or graduate-level athletic training students with direct exposure to pediatric sports medicine and orthopaedic clinical practice. The program places students in observational and hands-on clinical settings where they work alongside experienced sports medicine providers and physician extenders to enhance clinical evaluation skills, learn documentation practices, participate in patient education, and observe the collaborative care of pediatric patients. Projects may include the development of patient education materials and journal club presentations to strengthen research literacy and communication skills. Unique opportunities can include observing orthotic/prosthetic fittings, physical and occupational therapy sessions, serial casting, and surgical observation. This rotation is structured to broaden a student’s understanding of pediatric sports injury prevention, evaluation, management strategies, and interdisciplinary care in a high-volume children’s healthcare environment.
