Anesthesiology Residency Program

• Must have MD/DO (or equivalent medical degree – MBBS for IMGs)
• USMLE scores required (Step 1; Step 2 strengthens application)
• Completion of USMLE Step 3 required before starting CA-1 year
• COMLEX scores accepted for osteopathic applicants
• Strong academic performance, leadership & professionalism considered
• Research experience preferred but not mandatory
• International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are eligible (typically require ECFMG certification)
• Visa sponsorship generally not available

The Anesthesiology Residency Program at University of Illinois College of Medicine (UICOM), Chicago is a 4-year categorical program that provides comprehensive training in perioperative medicine, anesthesia, critical care, and pain management. The program begins with a PGY-1 internship year (at University of Illinois Hospital and Jesse Brown VA Medical Center), followed by three years of advanced clinical anesthesia training (CA-1 to CA-3). Residents gain hands-on experience across diverse subspecialties including neurosurgical, obstetric, pediatric, and pain anesthesia, along with exposure to intensive care and emergency settings. The curriculum includes structured rotations, clinical teaching, and skill-based training (such as ultrasound and procedural techniques), ensuring residents develop strong clinical competence, decision-making ability, and readiness for independent practice or fellowship training
